The Plan of Operations – private Woodlands

The original booklet is courtesy of Dave Stewart, Dufftown, from a collection of papers belonging to his father George Stewart a forester for many years with the Forestry Commission.

The estate owner or manager must really have wondered what they had done to deserve the role of completing this plan. However it was a condition of those applying for entry of their woodlands into Dedication or Approved Woodland schemes. While the planting grant may have been modest at around £23 per acre there was for the Dedication Scheme in 1969 an annual management grant of 21/3 per acre up to 100 acres, 14/3 for the second 100 acres and 8/9 for the remainder.

The Plan of Operations contained the information for filling out the forms from GD 1 to GD13 which were:

Table of Contents
Details of Ownership and Certificate of Approval
Classification and Description of the Area
Description of the Woodlands
Objects of Management
Proposed Methods of Working
Detailed Area Analysis
Compartment Notes
Age Class by Analysis
Planting Proposals and Control Form
Thinning Proposals and Control Form
Felling Proposals and Control Form
Summary of Work Proposed and Done
Annual record of Planting
Annual record of Thinning and Felling

See the attached PDF for the complete plan.
