A12 Paylist Benmore Forest Workers
The image is courtesy of Dave Stewart, Dufftown, from a collection of papers belonging to his father George Stewart.
This is the earliest Forestry Commission Paylist (A12) yet featured on the website. Note that the employees were paid fortnightly at this time and were working a five and half day week. It is difficult to ascertain if this is a genuine paylist copy of one that was made up as part of the teaching process. However George was called up after finishing at Benmore and may have worked there for a period before being sent to his service posting. There is a name D Stewart with a different forest identity code (20), Benmore was (7), and whether this was actually George Stewart is difficult to confirm. If the code for Drumtochty Forest was (20) then it could well be the case.
Note the other names of J Campbell, R Maxwell, A Maclaren, J Deans and J Stewart and the rates of pay per day from 10/11 to 12/- (shillings). The number of days each man worked over the fortnight differs from 9 days to 11 days. Note the account heads or numbers to which portions of the wages were assigned in the FC accounting system. Unfortunately the paylist is only partially completed.
Any further information would be very welcome.
