Tom Lothian at Tulliallan Forest Nursery

The Image and poem courtesy of Tom Lothian who in his early days started working at Forestry Commission Tulliallan Forest Nursery in 1953 and then transferred to Forestry Commission Strathyre Forest in 1954 until he was called up for National Service in 1955. Tom with a group of others boys stayed in the forestry hostels in both locations. The group included his close friend John (Butch) Murray who has added more details in his story and images on this website.

While based at Tulliallan hostel much of the work for the boys was in Devilla Forest a few miles away where they were transported in the back of a lorry under the ‘hap’ with its bench seats along the sides and against the cab all under a light frame and canvas cover.

Here Tom is seated on a Triumph Tiger Cub motorcycle in Tulliallan Nursery with the nissen hut tool shed behind and the roof of head forester Arthur Simpson’s house to the right.

The words of a poem were composed by Tom for a song performed by some of the Strathyre ‘Hostel Boys’ at a concert in the Strathyre around 1954 are in the attached PDF. The words and tune were based on the song featured in the comedy Radio programme ‘Much Binding in the Marsh’ broadcast from 1944 – 1954 featuring Kenneth Horne and Richard Murdoch located in a fictional RAF station coping with everyday red tape and post war shortages. Some lines are printed below but the full version is in the PDF.

We are the Bothy Boys
Here to amuse
We’ll raise a laugh or two and chase away those winter blues
So don’t go away a while
We won’t be long
And hope to cheer you with this our tribute song

At much binding in Strathyre
Our reason here tonight’s to entertain you
At much binding in Strathyre
We hope our dreadful singing does not pain you
For we have sung in cabaret and also in pantomime
We also sing with Frankie Lane and Dicky Valentine
But we have yet to sing with Harding on TV in What’s my Line
At much binding in Strathyre

I can't recall who owned the bike. My brother had one, but it never got as far as Fife from Milngavie, my home town.
