George and Robin Wright crosscutting
The image is courtesy of Dave Stewart from a collection belonging to his father George Stewart. George was stationed as a forester at Durris at this time and grew up in Auchenblae close to Drumtochty Forest.
George and Robin have just finished cutting a slab off a large tree trunk with a raker tooth hand saw. The slab was being used at the 1951 Highland Show.
The additional image in the attached PDF shows the cross cutting in progress with the axe being used to keep the cut open and prevent the saw jamming.
Any suggestions as to the tree species and what it was used for at the Highland Show?
