Glenfinart Forest Working plan 1962

The document is courtesy of Glenbranter Forest office staff with particular thanks to Ian Adams who has stored these old files for many years.
This working plan (see the attached PDF) covers in much detail many aspects of the working forest which was initiated by the purchase of land in 1926. The details include brief overviews on transport, ports and harbours, geology, soils, topography, vegetation, schedules of plantable land and existing crops along with much else including future prescriptions.

Of interest are the descriptions of housing and other forest use buildings which range from forester’s houses to stables and wet weather shelters. The forest area included some 40 houses in varying standards of condition (including 12 newish Swedish Houses), three wet weather shelters, forest office, large garage, four huts for stores and four stables converted from former cottages! There are also other buildings on the four farms under Forestry Commission management and a further two community buildings including the ‘The Cosy Den club’ in the forest.

For the finincial gurus there are a number of pages of Financial Appraisals of several forest crops.

There is an extensive list of senior staff and foresters who worked at the forest over the years in Chapter 19 but only a list of the numbers of the present forest worker grades including five women (list is a bit vague on actual total).
District officers are named as:
J Hunter Blair, John Fraser, A H Gosling, Harry Watson (War years), S M Petrie, M MacPherson and W B Sutherland.
Foresters in charge with names added up to 1970 are named as;
J Webster, A Grant, H Macmillan, A Mackay, J Ferguson, J Mackay, E Angus, R Murray, R Oliphant, Dave Solway, D M Campbell, A MacIntosh and J McMillan.

Any details of any of the named people always welcome via the comments sections below.

I worked in the Glenfinart forest area in the fifties and sixties when I left school and done most of the jobs including the nursery and felling with cross cut saws and axes also dragging out timber with my Dad who owned the horse. I also recognise most of the foresters including my uncle Malcolm McIntyre.
