Post hole borer on Lour Estate , Forfar

Photograph courtesy of Leslie Phillip, Perth, showing a Jonsered saw with post hole borer attachment.

Note the line wire dispenser in the distance behind the post lying on the ground. The cross arms of the dispenser with upright pegs held the coil of wire securely as it rotated on the base plate when the wire was pulled out along the fence by hand.

Any detail of this borer tool attachment would be very welcome.

This machine was a vast improvement on the heavy pinch bar for making post holes, that was until it struck a tree root then the operator was given a few spins around it before being thrown of his feet.

The wire dispenser in the background was made by the local blacksmith the base is a metal land wheel from a Ransomes plough, this meant wire could be pulled over long distances by one person, a heavy stone was often placed on top to create drag as the weight of the roll of wire became lighter.

Another photograph of the Jonsered post hole borer has been added as a PDF.

Can anyone remember if it was a 651 or a 751?

This was used on large fencing projects on Lour Estate in the 1960's.

It is a Jonesereds 751.

Note the flat top iron wheeled barrow in the distant background this was hand made by the head forester in the early 1950s to stand on to gain height when driving in the fence posts.
