Affric Forest, Cannich squad and the Forest Office
Photograph courtesy of Bill Rayner, Tibbermore, who has provided some information on the group.
A view from the back door of the bothy as the squad start heading for their morning’s work destinations.
1 = George ‘Geordie’ Douglas (Ganger)
2 = Wladyslaw (?) Rura (‘Rura’) (Harvesting and shinty stick maker)
3 = Davie Cameron (Establishment)
4 = ‘Cheshire’ Cameron (Establishment)
5 = Wattie Baxter (Establishment)
6 = Willie MacDonald (Ganger)
7 = Jock Stirling (Guisichan Ganger)
8 = ‘Sparky’ David Sparks? (Driver, establishment)
9 = Alec Nicol (Forester)
The Land Rover with the snow plough frame on the front enabled Jock Stirling to clear his way down from Tomich to Cannich. Jock seated and ready for the off!
The newest Transit crew bus driven by ‘Sparky’, Geordie didn’t drive so he was chauffeured and ‘Sparky’ kept a very clean motor, again seated and ready to go!
Land Rover (VBY 723M) on the right was used by the Foresters and I think that it is Alec Nicol (?) hurrying to retrieve something afore the off!
When the site was sold off after Affric Forest became part of the Fort Augustus Forest District, the bothy became a hostel, whilst the owners made their home in the office.
