Fordson Major on half tracks and 10x28 wheels
Two files containing about 65 Head Quarters Mechanical Development Committee Reports from 1950 to 1958 were saved from destruction by Jim Christie former Forestry Commission HQ, Plant Engineer. Jim, from Crook of Devon, has kindly made the reports available for scanning and entry onto this website. Please open the PDF to see this full report.
Report No 20 was more of an evaluation of a new tractor configuration rather than a strict testing assessment. The addition of the half tracks and large diameter front wheels for the ‘Forestry’ version of the Fordson tractor was in hindsight a landmark step forward and possibly led directly to the well known Ford County models of the future years. It obviously impressed the assessment team.
In the file circulation notes the Director (England?) has indicated to the others the potential future for such a machine.
