Timber harvesting operations – Strathyre Forest?
Photograph taken by Don MacCaskill and image courtesy of Bridget MacCaskill, Strathyre. Don was based as Head Forester at Inverinan from about 1960 through to about 1968 before transferring initially to Allean Forest and then Strathyre Forest in1972.
A series of photographs where two men are seen working with a Timberjack Skidder dragging loads of whole trees to roadside then first cutting off the log material at the first stopping point then pulling forward to the pulp wood stack and cross cutting the smaller stems there.
In this photograph the two men working on repairing one of the wire winch ropes by splicing in a new loop into the end to hold the rope slings. In the large image you can just see how one end of the rope was pulled under several of the strands a number of times and the operator is now using Felco wire cutters to cut off the unwanted long end. They are at least wearing leather gloves to protect their hands from the broken wire strands that often stick out and pierce the skin. Must have been a good summer day and no midges!
The PDF shows the team working at the road side with the Timberjack skidder and also a partial view of possibly Don MacCaskill’s Ford Escort van Registration beginning with XYF.
Can anyone name the two operators and confirm if this is Strathyre Forest?
